The return of an old friend...

December 30, 2008     Personal

It is rare that I get overly excited about material things, but this Christmas I was given one of the most meaningful gifts I have ever received and I just have to share the story with you.

I believe it was 1998 when my Dad handed me what would soon become my most treasured possession - a fully manual 35mm Olympus camera. Since there was nothing automatic on it, I was forced to learn everything about photography - from exposure to simply focusing and then with my fingers crossed I would spend hours on end (many times into the wee hours of the morning) in the darkroom lovingly watching my black & white photos come to life.

Years went by and I moved into the world of digital, forgetting about my old friend. Even after it was sold, I didn't really give it a second thought. This past year however, I started thinking back on how far I had come in photography and mentioned to my Dad that it would be really neat to have that old Olympus back.

Well, much to my surprise, he miraculously found the person he had sold it to and bought it back for me. You should have seen my face when I opened the box! I can't begin to explain how appreciative I am that my Dad introduced me to photography and for the opportunity to use his old camera as my first tool. Every time I pick up my technologically enhanced camera today, I still find myself applying the same methodologies that were learned from this one. No amount of technology can overcome a misunderstanding of f-stops and apertures. And this old camera provided me just that...a rewarding and in those early years, humbling, series of lessons on the fundamentals of great photography. I will forever be thankful!

Holiday family fun!

December 28, 2008     Personal

Never in a million years would I have guessed that a video game would cause so much laughter and excitement! WOW! Over the holidays Eric and I had both of our parents over to play a little Wii and it was HI-LAR-I-OUS. I would also like to add that both of our parents are now proud owners of their own Wii systems! (how funny is that?!:)) I know they are most likely going to kill me for posting these photos, but I can't let these little gems just sit here on my computer for my enjoyment when I can share them with the world!! :)

Here's my husband Eric boxing my Dad... I wonder who's winning??:)

My mom (left) and Eric's mom jammin' out on Guitar Hero

My father-in-law finding the beat :)

We then celebrated Christmas at my parent's house this year and I just had to take everyone's picture by the tree! Here's my sweet little niece Erin who is about 16 months old.

I like to be crazy with the older kids so that they continue to be interested in me taking their photos - it's working so far! :)
This is my 6-year-old nephew Adam!

And my darling niece April (she's 3-1/2)

Ok, and now I think my family REALLY might kill me for posting these, but I can't seem to hold myself back!
This is my sister and her husband. :)

And my Mom and Dad!

Lastly, here's my uncle Larry! We were so happy he was able to join us this year for Christmas!

What a year it has been....

December 23, 2008     Personal

My poor blog has been abandoned by yours truly for the past couple of weeks and I have a list of excuses, but don't worry, I'll spare you. I'm sure many of you are running around frantic making sure someone has the green bean casserole baking and that grandma Millie has a ride from the airport. But, in all the hustle and bustle I encourage you to stop for a moment and reflect on the year... after grandma's picked up of course.:)

I'm sure you can relate when I say that each year seems to pass a little quicker than the last. I keep trying to find ways to slow it down, but then I find myself at the end of December wondering how we got here already!? So, if any of you have the secret to adding just a few more hours into each day, please share!! I'd do anything for that little bit of info...well, almost anything. :) I guess it's not all bad if the saying, "Time flies when you're having fun" holds true. Gosh, come to think of it, for the most part this year was a blast! Maybe we all shouldn't have so much fun next year...;)

Thank you for making this year so memorable and for sharing in this journey! I have a wonderful feeling that 2009 will be just as bright...if not brighter.

Happy Holidays! (below is a photo from each shoot in 2008)
